In stressful times, people dream of an earthly paradise, a bountiful place where care is banished and eternal happiness reigns. In the late Middle Ages, the ravages of warfare and plague in Europe gave rise to the legend of the Land of Cockaigne, where houses were tiled with pies, roast fowls flew into the mouths of yawning idlers, and cheese and boots grew on trees. The Renaissance painter Peter Bruegel the Elder, who made a career of setting venerable folk traditions in contemporary Flemish landscapes, painted a little masterwork based on this myth, which hangs in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
